School Competion in Ghana

Friday was the Leadership Competition that we came here for. Timothy Bowles was in Ghana nine weeks ago and set up a YHRI program. The assignment involved five schools, who were to do a research project regarding Human Rights issues in their city. The schools were then to prepare a presentation to compete for a grand prize. There were judges, all of whom were activist in Human Rights in Ghana, local press, teachers, political dignataries, etc. They could use any medium. We saw a slideshow, signboards and photos as part of thier presentations. When all was completed, the winning school was Accra Girls School! All of the kids, high school aged, worked very hard to prepare. Tim prepared them the day before with a talk on Stage Presence and leadership. The winning presenter (Anna, second from the right in the front row) stayed up all night to prepare for the competition.

Saturday we went to Makola Market. It’s like the Farmer’s Market in Hollywood, except larger and wierder. Lots of local grown produce, including the large snails that are found in the bush, and CHINESE IMPORTS – TONS!

Internet connections, much less electricity, is not constant. My posts are handwitten and uploaded as soon as I, a) get a computer, b) have power and, c) have internet access. And when you get it, it’s slow, like dial-up.
