Funeral procession, Freetown Sierra Leone
We got back to Ghana on Friday afternoon after the plane we were expecting was three hours late.
Sierra Leone was an experience.
Accommodations:The guest house we stayed at was not on the grid so ran on gennies day and night. The smaller quieter one ran during the day, while the larger noisier one ran at night. My room was right next to the gennies. Across the street, about 100 yards away was THE nightspot: Paddy’s – a pub. Music started at 11:30PM and stopped at 6:45AM. So it was a choice: music or generator? I chose the genny, but could still hear the music just under it.
The Area:
Probably the prettiest of all the places. The city of Freetown sits in very hilly terrain, with narrow roads winding up the hills. Beaches are relatively clean, with palm trees swaying in the breeze. The roads are paved and in fairly good shape, as opposed to Monrovia roads. It was a British settlement/colony so along with the ever-present shacks, there are large buildings and streets with English names. Lots more dogs and cats and they are all the same color combo: white and orange.
The Students in the YHRI competition:
The most dedicated, researched, studied of all the groups. We were blown away by thier reports and presentations.
We return to LA tomorrow. I am without a laptop to process images for the blog. Our Liberian friend Jay left us in Monrovia on our way back (the flight took us from Freetown to Accra via Monrovia) and Jay had the laptop.
I look forward to getting home.
