Snow Geese, Sauvie Island, Oregon
Since we now in in the city, we don’t get to enjoy nature (namely birds) as much as we used to. We do miss it. Since we had heard that Sauvie Island, which was only about 10 miles away, was a haven for birders, we took a short trip out today.
We were not disappointed. Actually, we hit the jackpot. We found one of the wildlife viewing stations along the road had a front row seat to see a very large contingent of Snow Geese. They were no more that 25 feet away! These birds are on their way to the Alaskan tundra. Just to give you an idea on how lucky were were, most wildlife bird photographers consider seeing this spectacle pretty high on the list.
We also saw Sandhill Cranes, which we learned spend winter on the the island. They were pretty far away, so no pictures. We also spotted lots of other birds. It was a fabulous day.
