Queen of the Night, LA CA

I’m in LA at a friend’s house for a few days. At the end of a very
long day (around 10PM), I’m having my nighttime tea, and my host comes
in the door. She says, “I see you’re in your pajamas. I was wondering if
you wanted to get out and do a quick photoshoot: the cactus are
blooming… now.” I look back and her, blinking, and without delay said.
“Let’s go!”.
When we lived in Burbank, I owned one of these cacti. It was easy
to know when it would bloom. I just happen to be here during the time
when they flower. This collection was in a Hollywood garden. The scent
was intoxicating. As we made our images, a Sphinx Moth flew in and out
of several blooms. They, too are nocturnal. It looks and acts like a
hummingbird so it was too fast to capture.
