Gravestone of the founder of Portland, Lone Fir Cemetary

We went for a walk at Portland’s Lone Fir Cemetery. As it was one of Portland’s oldest cemetaries, we knew we would see some very old gravestones. There was also a memorial for war veterans with the full Gettysburg address inscribed in brass. But this epitaph for Asa Lovejoy was my favorite:

“He endured the adventures of the plains and mountains, and
here—beside the Willamette chose and wisely developed the site of the
greatest city of the Columbia valley, afterward holding many offices of
public trust, and passing with the esteem of all.”

This says so much about the man. What a great tribute.
